Olive – Wild

Wild Olive (Olea europaea subsp. africana) is the African form of the olive tree, found across much of eastern and southern Africa. Ours comes from South Africa and can be a little more rustic than European olivewood, with superb wild grain.
It has a creamy golden-brown base with darker streaks, often with spectacular figure or burl. The grain is straight or wild, sometimes interlocked, with a fine, even texture and a natural oiliness that gives it a lovely feel in the hand. Freshly worked, it has a faint, pleasant scent.
It’s a superb turning wood and generally works, glues and finishes well, though defects aren’t unusual and can make it challenging. The trunks are twisted and gnarled, so long, clean boards are rare and command a premium. Dry it slowly to avoid cracking.
Olivewood has been treasured for thousands of years, especially in the Mediterranean and Middle East. It’s naturally food-safe and hard-wearing, so it’s a favorite for kitchen utensils and cutting boards, as well as turnings, carving, boxes, knife handles, furniture accents and veneer.
Not listed in the CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
Why We Love This Wood
A little more rustic than European Olive, but we think the wild grain is just superb!
